Mission and Background

Preserve Frederick is a non-profit citizens group in Frederick County, Virginia working to promote compatible development that strengthens our communities, protects our natural and historic resources, and preserves our rural character.

Frederick
County lies at the northern end of the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia and surrounds the historic city of Winchester.  The Winchester-Frederick County area—about an hour’s drive west of Washington DC—is bordered by the Allegheny Mountains to the west and the Blue Ridge to the east.  Originally settled in the 1700s, the northern Valley has enjoyed a stable agricultural economy for almost 300 years.  But recent decades have seen increasing development pressure from the DC metropolitan area, presenting planning challenges to county leaders and residents who work to strengthen the local economy by balanced growth while striving to retain the character of Frederick County.

Preserve Frederick was created in 2006 in response to a rezoning application to greatly expand a quarry site at the southern end of the county -- an expansion that would threaten significant historic and natural resources.  Since then, Preserve Frederick has expanded its vision and goals as it has worked to encourage state-of-the-art planning and policy-making that sustains the county’s agricultural economy, cultivates livable neighborhoods, and protects historic and natural resources.
